Barriers of Effective Communication simply means that any condition that prevents the message from being communicated as expected by the sender to the recipient.
Barriers in Communication will probably mislead people into thinking something else. To improve communication and make it more effective it is important to understand the barriers of effective communication and try to remove them.
The author of Parent Effectiveness Training Program, Thomas Gordon said that people use barriers of communication 90% of the time in conflict situations. Therefore, it is worthwhile to describe some of the common responses that will inevitably have a negative effect on communication.

6 Main Barriers of Effective Communication:
There could be many reasons for barriers to communication. Down below are mentioned 6 main barriers of effective communication.
1 Selective Perception:
When the receiver hears the message based on his/her own interest, experience and background we call it selective perception. This is a problem when the receiver ignores all those things which are not based on his/her own interest. This is a barrier of communication that can delude the receiver. However, it can be removed if the sender tries to gain the maximum attention of the receiver before transferring the message.2 Bad Relationship:
A bad relationship can be one of the barriers of effective communication, it may be between two individuals, firms or companies which can lead to misunderstanding. Bad relationships can also lead to manipulation, if it gets worse one may manipulate the other which can create bad consequences. Therefore, Bad Relationships may be a huge barrier of effective communication. It can be removed by understanding each other’s feelings. If it is occurring between firms and companies, they must understand the nature of the problem.3 Noise:
One of the common barriers of effective communication discussed is noise. Noise can be defined as a kind of inheritance that damage the actual message which has been sent, it can occur in many forms for example loss of concentration or wandering in the mind, it can also be a distraction due to the picture on the wall. It can also be any type of physical noise for example someone is listening to a live podcast with concentration and suddenly receives a call from his friend.4 Distortion:
Distortion means confusing and conflicting messages. Distortion and noise have a common outcome which is the message has not fully understood by the recipient. The difference is that distortion is a misinterpretation of a complete message. It is one of the common barriers of effective communication, it can be removed by using proper language in a way that even a common man understands the message. Just like noise distortion can also appear in many forms.5 Poor Feedback:
Feedback is a confirmation that the message has been received and understood. Feedback is one of the important factors of effective communication, it makes communication a two-way process. Feedbacks can also appear in many forms for example one can ask you to repeat your message so they can understand it perfectly. Poor feedback is one of the barriers of effective communication which means that the receiver didn’t respond effectively because they may have not understood or maybe they have ignored your message.6 Differences Between People:
Differences in social class, age, educational level, beliefs and the field of interest can also play its role in barriers of effective communication for example thumbs up is a good positive gesture which means “good, yes I approve” but in Iran, Afghanistan and parts of Italy. it means “up yours” and it is taken as an insult. Further, the difference in mental attitude is also a factor of barriers of effective communication.
Barriers of Non-Verbal Communication:
There are also barriers of non-verbal communication that are important to understand. Study shows that about 55% feedback of a message is communicated through non-verbal interaction. Non -Verbal communication includes facial expressions, gestures and touch (By touching people in different ways can silently communicate friendship, love, approval, anger or other feelings). Barriers in communication can also occur in non-verbal ways, for example, the receiver is avoiding eye contact or he/she is staring at you or might making slow movements i.e. trying to avoid conversation.
